OUR IMPACT

OUR SUSTAINABILITY

At Manda Bay, sustainability isn’t just a policy—it’s a way of life. Nestled within a pristine coastal ecosystem, we are deeply committed to preserving the natural beauty that surrounds us. From behind-the-scenes systems to guest-facing initiatives, every detail is thoughtfully designed to reduce our footprint and support the local environment.

We are proudly single-use plastic free, conduct regular beach cleanups, and ensure all plastics—whether from the lodge or shoreline—are sent to the Lamu Recycling Center.

Glass waste is crushed on-site and returned to sand, while tins and other non-recyclables are safely incinerated in our own incinerator.

All organic kitchen waste is composted, nourishing our gardens and reducing landfill. Our sustainable charcoal ovens are fuelled by charcoal we make ourselves using responsible methods.

The lodge runs entirely on solar power, with a generator only as backup, and because fresh water is scarce on the island, we desalinate well water to meet all our needs.

Fishing at Manda Bay is done with care and respect for the ocean—we follow sustainable practices and only source local seafood of the correct size and species. Even our beehives play a role, helping maintain a healthy, balanced ecosystem.

Every effort is part of our broader mission: to create an unforgettable guest experience while treading lightly on this incredible land we call home.

CONSERVATION

We have a vast amount of wildlife on the island as well as a resident herd of buffalo that once roamed freely between the mainland and Manda. But with the development of the area and the dredging of the channels, their migratory route disappeared—so they stayed. We’ve taken on the responsibility of caring for them, making sure they have enough food and water year-round and we routinely deworm the herd to keep them healthy. During the dry season, we supplement their diet with ranch cubes and provide at least 2,000 litres of fresh water a day from our desalination plant—for them and the other wildlife too. Without this, survival would be impossible.

Our conservation team patrols the island daily to remove snares, monitor wildlife, and protect the ecosystem. We’ve cleared invasive bush and reintroduced native grasses to improve grazing.

We have also partnered with The Manda Conservancy which has secured land on the northeastern peninsula of Manda Island with the goal of protecting its unique flora and fauna. At the heart of their vision is the creation of an education centre focused on land and marine conservation. By offering tertiary-level training, the initiative aims to empower future generations with the knowledge and skills to manage natural resources sustainably, support indigenous revenue opportunities, and uplift local communities—ultimately improving livelihoods and reducing poverty.

MANDA BAY & THE OCEAN TRUST

At Manda Bay, we’re committed to marine conservation and sustainable tourism. In partnership with The Ocean Trust, we’re working to restore Kenya’s coral reefs and protect marine life along the Lamu Archipelago.

Over the next 10 years, our goal is to reduce damage to reefs, fish stocks, and wildlife by empowering local communities through education and sustainable resource management. This supports both biodiversity and livelihoods.

With support from Mars Inc., The Ocean Trust has planted over 120 Reef Stars near the lodge—regenerative structures hosting over 15 species of coral. These efforts aim to restore coral reefs, which are vital habitats for 25% of all marine life.

Guests at Manda Bay can witness this vital work firsthand and learn about the importance of coral reef conservation, responsible fishing, and community-led sustainability in Lamu.
